Feb 23rd 2012, 16:09

By msnbc.com staff and news services

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. -- Fire swept through an old two-family house early Thursday, killig four children and a grandmother, local media reported.

An 8-year-old was taken in critical condition to a hospital, and three other children escaped, the Star-Ledger reported.

The house, believed to be more than 130 years old, caught fire around 3 a.m.

A 12-year-old girl, a 7 year-old boy, a 3-year-old boy, a 2-year-old and a grandmother were reported killed,  according to the Star-Ledger.

A next-door neighbor told the newspaper the fire was raging by the time firefighters arrived.

“The flames were enormous. They were coming out of the top of the house,” the neighbor, Robin Stagnitto, was quoted as saying “The fire just kept going for a couple of hours.”

The large home sits on a raised corner lot on a quiet suburban street of well-tended two and three-story houses.

Half of the house was completely burned out, with windows blown out and the white siding charred with black smoke.

Gov. Christie: I'm with Obama on gay marriage

Gov. Chris Christie, R-NJ., joins Morning Joe to discuss Wednesday night's GOP debate in Arizona, why he thinks Rick Santorum had an "awful night" at the debate, and why he vetoed a bill allowing same-sex marriage in New Jersey.

By msnbc.com and wire reports

Following his veto of a bill allowing gay marriage in his state, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie accused Democrats of playing politics with the issue and said his stance is no different than President Obama's.

“I have the exact same position as the president… The Democrats in my state are criticizing me, saying my feet are firmly planted on the wrong side of justice. I said yesterday, ‘Yeah, my feet are firmly planted right next to President Obama.’ And they don’t criticize him,” Christie on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”.

Christie defended his view that voters should be the ones who decide what defines marriage in his state.

“Even though it’s against my belief on this, I’m willing to be governed on it [by the voters],” Christie said. Last Friday, Christie vetoed a bill that would have allowed gay marriage in the state. The Republican governor accompanied his veto with a call for lawmakers to appoint an advocate for same-sex couples under the state's existing civil union law.

Obama, on the other hand, has been coy on the subject of gay marriage, Christie insisted. Obama has supported strengthening civil unions, just as he has, but hasn’t gone further than that, Christie said.

“The president has hidden on this issue,” Christie told MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. “The president opposes same-sex marriage.”

Harold Ford, Jr., a former Democratic congressman, also on the show, pointed out that Obama applauded New York’s decision to approve gay marriage.

“So he applauds other people’s courage, but doesn’t have any of his own,” Christie shot back.

Christie reiterated that he would respect the people’s will if the measure passed in a statewide referendum.

“You need three-fifths of the state legislature to get it on the ballot, and I’ve called on every Republican to vote yes, to put it on the ballot,” he said.

“Morning Joe” contributor Jonathan Capehart, an openly gay Washington Post columnist, confronted Christie.

“I heard you say that you have your feet firmly planted next to President Obama on this issue, but the key difference between you and the president is that while you support putting the civil rights of that minority up for a public referendum, the president is not in favor of that,” Capehart said.

“Has he said that, Jonathan? … Have you heard him say it?” asked Christie. “He’s silent on this issue like he is on every issue that is difficult for him.”

Fla. lawmaker suspected of stalking US attorney
Feb 23rd 2012, 14:15

By Amara Sohn, NBCMiami.com

MIAMI -- The text messages, described as creepy and disturbing, originated from a Yahoo! screen name "itsjustme24680," and were sent to a married, assistant U.S attorney, Marlene Fernandez-Karavetsos.

She was able to save some of the messages on her phone to show investigators, court records say. The series of messages began with this conversation:

itsjustme24680: sexxxxy mama? :)

Fernandez-Karavetsos: How do i know you?

itsjustme24680: Hi...sorry, I missed you... what's up?

Fernandez-Karavetsos: who is this?

itsjustme24680: you dont remember?

The U.S. Secret Service traced the screen name to Florida House Representative Richard Steinberg of Miami Beach. The 39-year-old lawyer, who is married with a daughter, is now under investigation, suspected of stalking Fernandez-Karavetsos, according to a search warrant filed in January in Miami-Dade Circuit Court.

According to the search warrant affidavit, she told investigators that she knows Steinberg "in a professional, non-intimate way," and that the messages caused her "substantial emotional distress."

Neither she nor Steinberg could be reached for comment about the series of text messages that were sent between August and October 2011.

Another conversation reads:

itsjustme24680: Good morning!

Fernandez-Karavetsos replies, "Leave me alone."

itsjustme24680: is that a way to treat a friend? lol
itsjustme24680: how's motherhood?
itsjustme24680: getting any sleep?
itsjustme24680: Georgie doing well?

This is the last time I'm going to ask, you've been texting long enough - who is this?

itsjustme24680: considering we're both married parents, probably best I not answer that at this point...

itsjustme24680: Marlene?

Miami Beach Detectives have now requested access from Yahoo! to email messages from Steinberg's account. The investigation is ongoing.
