Graphic ads warn of danger near railroad tracks
Jun 9th 2012, 01:38

NJ Transit presented two rather blunt public service announcements Friday with a simple plea: "Stay off the tracks." The goal is to reduce railroad fatalities.Titled "You Don't Win" and "You're Dead," the ads that will begin running this weekend on broadcast and cable networks in Philadelphia and New York give dramatic, firsthand accounts from police and transit workers involved in recent fatalities and from the families of people who were killed. Three deaths last fall were apparently part of a widespread problem on railroads in the region — people trespassing on tracks who are accidentally killed and those who enter the danger zone to commit suicide. In the last two years, at least 91 people have been killed by trains on NJ Transit and SEPTA lines, officials have said.

Soul game off TV because of labor uncertainty
Jun 8th 2012, 23:15

In what is another black eye for the Arena Football League, Friday night's Soul game will not be televised on the NFL Network because of labor uncertainty surrounding the league. The Soul was scheduled to play at Milwaukee at 8 p.m. "This is unfortunate, but we understand the decision being made by NFL Network," AFL commissioner Jerry Kurz said in a statement that came 1 hour, 33 minutes before kickoff. "The public negotiation tactics of some have put a large number of people in a difficult situation. We will continue to work at reaching an agreement with our players and hope that those involved in the talks will proceed in a more constructive way."

Memorial service for firefighters killed in Kensington warehouse blaze
Jun 8th 2012, 20:45

Almost two months after a Kensington fire claimed the lives of two Philadelphia firefighters, family members and the community are still searching for answers."We come today trying to — still trying to — understand the why. And, for me at least, the most frustrating part of that is trying to know or understand what you cannot know or understand," Mayor Nutter said during an all-faiths gathering for fallen firefighters Capt. Robert Neary and Lt. Daniel Sweeney on Wednesday morning. About 60 people, including the Sweeney and Neary families and a dozen religious leaders, attended the memorial service at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. It was organized through the Mayor's Office, the Fire Department, and the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia.

Why hasn't the recovery kicked in yet?
Jun 8th 2012, 20:22

Last winter, Karl Smith, an economist at the University of Carolina, was predicting that the United States was headed for a strong recovery in 2012. His logic was seductively simple — there was lots of pent-up demand for things like cars and housing, and that demand was bound to kick in eventually.

Tax loophole or policy fix? It can be in the eye of the beholder
Jun 8th 2012, 19:17

When John Boehner affirmed last month that Republicans would be willing to close tax carve-outs and loopholes—even if it raised rates for some—to come to a grand bargain on taxes and the deficit, it seemed to suggest a path to compromise. The problem is that what constitutes a tax loophole is can be in the eye of the beholder.
