Wonkbook: The GOP's three bad options

If Mitt Romney loses in Michigan tonight -- and, to some degree, even if he wins -- the GOP is caught between three seemingly impossible alternatives.

One option is that they nominate Romney, a candidate who has proven himself unexpectedly weak, and has thus been unexpectedly weakened, in the primaries. Republican voters used to be able to quiet their internal doubts about Romney by telling themselves he was an electable, inevitable nominee who would easily defeat President Obama. None of that looks true. To nominate Romney, the Republican Party would have to nominate someone it doesn't really like and who who no longer inspires its confidence.
